California, Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Washington are all pushing their budgets higher, all while the federal government pulls back the purse strings. It’s a tale of liberal incompetence at its peak—states are bloated with spending, and now they’re scrambling like panicked teenagers on prom night, all because they overindulged during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Let’s start with Washington. Just a decade ago, the state’s budget was around $80 billion. Now, it has skyrocketed to over $173 billion—a staggering 116% increase that has little to show for it. They’re in a budget crisis, and it’s clear that the spending spree has led them right to the precipice of financial collapse. Certainly not the politicians who keep signing off on this out-of-control spending.
California is another shining example of fiscal irresponsibility. Governor Gavin Newsom and his Democratic allies have pushed spending up by more than $100 billion in just six years. They ignore their own state constitution mandating a balanced budget. Instead, California officials have been over-projecting tax revenues like they’re playing a high-stakes poker game. This kind of financial chicanery—essentially accounting tricks straight out of a scandal-ridden playbook—would make even the most brazen con artists proud.
Meanwhile, in Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker has seen discretionary spending shoot up by over $16 billion. The previous steady handling of the budget has been thrown out the window under Democrat control. Illinois taxpayers are left holding the bag while legislators pander to their friends and followers, padding their budgets and expanding government at an alarming rate. No wonder Illinoisans are feeling the brunt of this financial mismanagement; they’re trapped in a cycle of higher taxes and less accountability.
Pennsylvania is yet another state that shows the Democrats’ budget-busting tendencies. Spending has increased nearly 64% under Democrat leadership. Taxpayer advocates are sounding the alarm, warning of the structural deficit that’s projected to balloon to $4.8 billion. The Democrats want to spend, and they’re doing it without considering the long-term implications. The only thing consistent here is the prioritization of irresponsible spending habits over fiscal responsibility.
Across the board, we see a pattern: When Democrats are in control, budgets explode, debt piles up, and none of it translates into value for taxpayers. Instead, they expand Medicaid beyond sustainable levels, provide government programs that yield nothing but more bureaucracy, and push for budget increases that do nothing for hard-working families. This is the profligate liberal agenda in action—an insatiable thirst for power and spending without any regard for consequences.
As these states spiral into fiscal irresponsibility, one has to wonder: when will the left be held accountable for this chaos?
