In the smoke and mirrors world of Democratic politics, no trick is too dirty to keep a failed policy on life support. Obamacare’s subsidies are set to expire, but instead of letting a crumbling system fall under its own weight, some weak-kneed Republicans have joined hands with Democrats to keep pumping billions into this disaster. They disguise the boatloads of taxpayer money as “temporary” when they clearly don’t want this gravy train to end.
Speaker Mike Johnson tried to bring some sense into the situation. He crafted a plan that offers a glimpse of the free market overhaul we so desperately need. Bigger Health Savings Accounts and caps on subsidies were a start, but some Republicans couldn’t muster the backbone to stand firm. They caved, worried about losing seats rather than doing what’s right. True conservatives understand that Washington’s decades-long failure to curb skyrocketing costs won’t be fixed by another patchwork of subsidies.
The Democrats’ objective here is clear: keep Obamacare alive until they reclaim total power in Congress. They want to gloss over the real issue of soaring premiums and shifting costs—to them, it’s just a show. Meanwhile, the American people are stuck footing the bill for insurance that costs too much and delivers too little.
The GOP has the right ideas on the table: allow healthcare co-ops across state lines and unleash the savings potential of HSAs. But Republicans need to stop bickering and unite behind these real solutions. Democrats won’t let this happen. They fear genuine reform that empowers Americans instead of trapping them in government dependency.
This divide within the Republican ranks is embarrassing. Can they ever rally behind a serious plan to dismantle the mess of Obamacare? Or will they continue to play politics while liberal policies destroy what’s left of our healthcare system? The answer to that question will decide the future of American healthcare—and the very soul of the GOP.
