Everywhere you look today, the Olympics are peddled as some woke, global playground—an excuse for rich elites and self-important bureaucrats to lecture America about how to behave. But while the left obsesses over “inclusion” and “shared values,” this country is sorely in need of a reminder about what American excellence actually looks like. That’s why Netflix’s new documentary, “Miracle: The Boys of ‘80,” comes at just the right time. It dredges up a moment liberals want you to forget: a bunch of young American men, outmanned and outgunned, shocking the world and humiliating the mighty Soviet Union on the ice.
Remember, it wasn’t just a hockey game in 1980. This was a straight-up showdown between the freedom-loving United States and the repressive Soviet machine. The so-called experts and global “sports commentators” had already written us off, loving every prediction of American defeat. The left does this all the time—whenever America is tested, they lower expectations, apologize for our history, refuse to believe America can still win. Yet a scrappy group of college kids in red, white, and blue gear proved them all wrong. They played for more than a medal. They played for country, family, and the very idea of America.
Of course, you’ll never hear the liberal media talk about the patriotic fire that drove that Miracle on Ice. They’d rather obsess over who’s kneeling or which athlete is too offended to show up for the flag. They downplay sports moments like this—moments that unite and inspire—because they don’t fit the narrative that America is broken, divided, and in desperate need of “change” from academic know-it-alls and unelected globalists.
Watching that game, you felt pride—not shame. It was America punching back, refusing to bow to communist bullies or international critics. These hockey players weren’t multimillionaires playing for endorsement deals. They were regular guys who dared to believe in this country, and who fought with everything they had just for the chance to represent us, not tear us down from within.
The left loves to talk about “progress,” but when was the last time progress looked like real, raw patriotism? When did it mean standing up to enemies and caring more about the Stars and Stripes than pleasing the world? The victory at Lake Placid wasn’t just about beating the Soviets—it was about reminding us all what the United States stands for. If only today’s generation had the grit—and the pride—to do it again. Maybe it’s time this country stopped making excuses and started believing in its own miracles.
