Universities are silencing debate and students are paying the price

Once upon a time, college campuses were places of true debate and real learning. Students and teachers would actually listen to different viewpoints—even those that challenged their safe little bubbles. But now? Look at what’s happening at places like UCLA. The cowardice on display is shocking. These institutions that claim to stand for free thought have become echo chambers, terrified of any voice that goes against the leftist narrative.

Back in the 1980s, even militant liberals were curious enough to sit and listen when someone controversial came to campus. It didn’t matter if a speaker was hated—the point was to hear a new opinion, maybe challenge them, maybe even change a mind or two. The so-called grown-ups in charge of universities encouraged those moments. They knew it built stronger arguments, and stronger citizens.

But today’s universities? They run and hide from ideas that aren’t woke-approved. Instead of inviting debate, they banish and silence anyone who dares step out of line. It’s easier to label voices as dangerous than to risk an honest conversation. This is how a free society dies—when the very places meant to guard liberty turn into frightened mobs of censors.

Let’s be honest: this isn’t about protecting students. It’s about controlling them. The radical left doesn’t want debate; they want obedience. If UCLA and its friends in academia had any backbone, they would demand more discussion, not less. But too many professors are more concerned about staying in the good graces of globalist think tanks or bending to every anti-American demand, no matter how ridiculous.

The hypocrisy is as massive as the egos running these schools. They brag about inclusivity, but only for their approved ideas. They talk about free speech, but only for people who repeat what they want to hear. Real courage means facing what you fear—including opposing points of view. The universities used to know that. What happened? When did so many become so spineless? Maybe it’s time to start asking if our children and our country deserve something better than this pathetic excuse for higher education.
