Eileen Gu silent as political prisoner’s daughter begs her to stand up to China

Eileen Gu might have won gold medals for China and appeared in glitzy ad campaigns, but now she faces a different kind of challenge—one that actually matters. The daughter of political prisoner Jimmy Lai is begging Gu to use her celebrity to stand up against the Chinese Communist Party and fight for her father’s freedom. But like far too many woke celebrities, Gu has stayed silent, happy to rake in money and fame while human lives hang in the balance.

Jimmy Lai’s only “crime” is standing up for democracy and freedom in Hong Kong. He’s rotting away in a Chinese prison. His daughter, Claire, is pleading with Eileen Gu to finally pick a side: say something, anything, to help this innocent man. Eileen was born in America and enjoyed all of the freedoms that come with it, but when it came time to choose between the USA and Communist China, she went where the endorsements were. Sure, she can hit jumps on a slope—but when it comes to speaking out for what’s right, it’s crickets.

Liberals cheer Eileen Gu as some sort of “inspiring” icon, but where are the principles? Where’s the bravery to stand up to the world’s worst dictatorship? The left loves to preach about “justice” and “human rights,” but turns a blind eye when it could cost them lucrative book deals or magazine covers. Eileen Gu has the global platform and power to make a difference. But the liberal ruling class would rather avoid upsetting China—wouldn’t want to lose those Beijing dollars, after all.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration does nothing. Democrats nod their heads at every activist cause—unless it puts them at odds with the regime in Beijing. American values used to mean something. Now, it seems our own athletes and politicians are more interested in appeasing tyrants than standing up for men like Jimmy Lai, a hero who risked everything for the freedom we take for granted.

Eileen Gu’s Olympic medals didn’t make the world a better place. If she wanted to do something truly brave, she’d call out the Chinese Communist Party and demand freedom for Jimmy Lai. But that would take real courage. Maybe that’s too much to expect from celebrities who care more about endorsement deals than liberty. When will the left stop worshiping fame and start defending freedom?
