Once again, Americans are reminded of what happens when government rushes to throw trillions of taxpayer dollars around without any real guardrails or accountability. In Virginia, a trio of fraudsters managed to steal more than $650,000 right out of the pockets of hard-working citizens by exploiting pandemic panic and liberal incompetence. These crooks used the personal information of jail inmates—yes, inmates—to file fake unemployment claims and cash in on the “emergency benefits” bonanza. This is what unchecked, big-government “compassion” gets us—a field day for thieves and con artists.
The so-called Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program was supposed to help struggling Americans. Instead, it opened a floodgate for fraud and abuse. All someone had to do was say they lost work “because of COVID,” and suddenly the gravy train arrived—never mind if the applicant was sitting behind bars. Pathetic oversight allowed the bad guys to run wild. In little more than a year, over $1.1 billion in fraudulent claims poured out of Virginia alone. That’s what you get when left-wing bureaucrats try to “fix” the economy with blank checks and zero common sense.
One of the ringleaders, Jonathan Ricketts, even ran his scam while locked up in jail. He rounded up the personal information and signatures of fellow inmates, mailed them out to his partners, and together they cooked up more than one hundred bogus claims. His wife and employees turned this scheme into a cottage industry, using a bogus “consulting” firm to organize the theft and rope in even more people. This wasn’t some spur-of-the-moment grift. It was a business model—built on government waste and liberal naivety.
While the people behind this operation are finally seeing some jail time, the truth remains—everyday law-abiding Americans are left holding the bill for these crimes. Meanwhile, Democrats and progressives never want to talk about the endless ways their programs bleed cash and reward criminals. Ask a liberal about this disaster, and they’ll ramble on about “helping the most vulnerable” while ignoring how criminals used their policies to rob the nation blind. Who gets punished in the end? Not the bureaucrats who rubber-stamped the payments, that’s for sure.
It’s almost like the folks running this country want chaos and confusion—because what better way to grow the size of government and line their own pockets? Maybe next time, instead of trusting every sob story with a bucket full of tax dollars, they’ll remember who actually built America. But don’t count on it. When was the last time the left paid a price for their reckless “compassion”? How much more will taxpayers tolerate before they finally say enough is enough?
