NYU cancels graduation speeches so no one can protest and everyone loses their voice

If you thought college graduation couldn’t get any worse, think again. New York University just proved that left-wing incompetence always finds a way. Instead of fixing their clear problem with radical student speeches turning graduations into political soapboxes, NYU’s brilliant plan is to silence everyone. Rather than remind valedictorians to stick to celebrating achievement, NYU decided to cut live student speeches entirely. That’s right—the kids don’t talk at graduation anymore, all because some couldn’t resist using the microphone to whine about their favorite woke cause.

Let’s not forget what sparked this. Too many students turned their big moment into protest theater, spouting off about international conflicts or tossing anti-American slogans into what should be a proud, unifying day. The adults in charge at NYU were too timid, or too in love with activist culture, to say “enough.” Now, they’ve chosen the laziest fix possible: just silence everyone. Every student, every family—everyone loses.

This is what passes for leadership at elite liberal universities. When the far left disrupts tradition, the school panics rather than using any common sense. Instead of making it clear that graduation is for achievement, not activism, NYU caves. If just a handful of students want to rant about Israel, climate change, or “systemic oppression,” then the whole class gets their basic right to speak yanked away. The hypocrisy is obvious—these same universities lecture the rest of America about “free speech,” but the moment their own precious ceremonies go off-script, they hit mute.

The worst part? This isn’t solving the real issue—it’s just papering over the fact that administrators are scared of their own students. NYU won’t demand respect for the occasion or set real boundaries. They bend to the loudest radicals and punish everyone else. Families come from across the world to celebrate a milestone, and instead, they get a sterile, silent production, all to avoid backlash from the perpetually outraged.

This is the modern left’s answer to everything: when you botch discipline, double down on control. Graduation becomes a stage-managed bore, all because the adults are too weak to say, “stick to the graduation, not the protest.” If NYU thinks this will keep politics out of the ceremony, they’re delusional—and frankly, they deserve to see their once-great institution turn into a national joke. Isn’t it time someone stood up and told these elite colleges: stop running scared and start acting like grown-ups?
