In an act of heroism that defies the dangerous narrative today’s liberals love to push, a fruit shop owner named Ahmed al-Ahmed took a stand against evil at Bondi Beach. In Australia, where protecting oneself has all but become a crime thanks to overreaching gun control laws, al-Ahmed displayed the courage and grit we desperately need in these dire times. When gunmen chose the first night of Hanukkah, a night of joy and light, to unleash terror on innocent families, it was a civilian—not a bureaucrat or policy—who stepped up to stop the madness.
The bystander didn’t call for sensitivity training or roundtable discussions. Instead, he went straight for the enemy, tackling and disarming one of the attackers in a blaze of bravery. While some politicians twiddle their thumbs in their ivory towers, out of touch with the struggles of daily life, Ahmed knew what had to be done, regardless of the personal risk. It was a powerful reminder that when push comes to shove, real heroes are right there in the streets, not sitting in government offices.
Tragically, the attack took 11 lives, including a brave policeman and a British-born rabbi among others. Yet, the media’s focus seems skewed. They’ll nod at al-Ahmed’s heroism but continue pushing their agenda that restricts honest citizens from defending themselves. In their eyes, it’s better to be a sitting duck than a hero with the power to change the tide. While security services knew at least one of these attackers beforehand, government bureaucracies often fail to act until it’s too late. What’s needed—what al-Ahmed shows—is a person ready to rise to the occasion.
While authorities are busy identifying links to extremist groups, one can’t help but notice how little attention is given to how we got here. Spineless politicians are more eager to paint law-abiding citizens as the problem rather than admitting their failures in maintaining law and order. Remember, these attacks happen when authorities miss the red flags. But, liberal narratives would rather see everyone disarmed and defenseless, ignoring that good people with strength and courage are the ones who can stand against chaos.
So when are we going to stop coddling the cowardly policies and wake up to the realities that so many of us face? People like Ahmed, risking his life for strangers, prove there are still those unafraid of taking swift action when lives hang in the balance. Maybe it’s time we start supporting policies that empower more individuals to do the same, rather than leaving us all at the mercy of violent extremists. Because who’s going to protect us? The disarm-the-people establishment, or courageous individuals willing to act?
