California Governor Gavin Newsom sure knows how to step in it. This week, he tried to pander to a black audience by saying he’s “just like them” because he struggled with SATs and has trouble reading. You can’t make this stuff up. It’s not just cringe, it’s downright insulting. If Donald Trump had marched into a room and compared his SAT scores to a room full of minorities, the media would be howling for impeachment—CNN would still be on commercial break.
Newsom, the golden boy of the coastal elites, wants everyone to believe he’s some hard-luck kid who barely scraped by. Reality check: he grew up rich and privileged, not in the “slums” he pretends to understand. Now, he’s trying to make his supposed dyslexia part of his political brand, hoping sympathy will distract from his record of failure. The guy who botched California is now trotting out “I can’t read so I’m just like you” as a talking point for black communities. This is liberal identity politics at its laziest—and it’s embarrassing for everyone involved.
At least some on the left are calling him out. Cornel West is fuming, and even he can see how hollow and degrading Newsom’s comments are. When a radical academic is the voice of reason, you know something’s gone off the rails. West points out that, instead of seeing black Americans as equals or individuals, Newsom went straight to stereotypes. That’s not bridge-building; it’s just the same old condescending bigotry repackaged by so-called “progressives.”
But here’s the twist: while pundits on the left throw around words like “white supremacy,” they’re missing reality. Newsom isn’t some hood-wearing villain—he’s just an elite liberal so out of touch he thinks this kind of pandering will win over voters. That’s the real insult. It shows the left’s total disconnect from the lives and dignity of everyday Americans—especially the communities they claim to represent.
Only Democrats could take a disaster like Newsom, dress up his incompetence as empathy, and expect the rest of the country to applaud. Maybe instead of making excuses, he should focus on actually fixing California. Or here’s a wild thought: try seeing people as people, not pitiful props in your re-election campaign. How much lower can the left stoop before voters finally say enough is enough?
