Minnesota Democrats have hit a new low. This week, one of their own lawmakers suggested it might be worthwhile to research the supposed “benefits” of shoplifting and retail theft. That’s right—while families and businesses across America get crushed by crime, the left wants to ask what’s in it for the thieves. It almost sounds like satire, but sadly, it’s the new normal up north.
State Rep. Dave Pinto, a Democrat from St. Paul and—believe it or not—a prosecutor, floated the idea that perhaps people depend on stealing from businesses. Anyone with common sense would see the devastating damage retail theft causes to moms-and-pops, workers, and law-abiding customers. But it looks like for Minnesota Democrats, protecting criminals takes priority over protecting honest Minnesotans.
This insanity isn’t happening in a vacuum. Minnesota is bleeding billions to fraud—yes, billions. Officials estimate $9 billion has gone up in smoke from public programs. Money meant to feed hungry children and help struggling families simply vanished, siphoned away by crooks gaming the system. With Democrats like Pinto heading up anti-fraud committees, is it any wonder criminals are having a field day?
Even big business is running for the exits. Target, once a staple of downtown Minneapolis, chose to pay a staggering $110 million just to break its lease rather than deal with the chaos and lawlessness enabled by soft-on-crime politicians. It’s not just shoplifters in the aisles—they get rewarded with endless excuses, while angry leftist mobs make things even worse by protesting law enforcement outside of the stores.
Now, the White House has to step in and freeze hundreds of millions in Medicaid funds because Minnesota can’t—or won’t—clean up the rampant fraud destroying its own backyard. It says a lot about liberal leadership when federal investigators have to do the job state officials refuse to do. How many more children, families, and businesses have to be hurt before Democrats finally put law-abiding Americans first? Or is sympathy for criminals just “progressive values” these days?
