California Governor Gavin Newsom is at it again—picking winners and losers, this time by declaring a war on kratom, a simple herbal medicine from Southeast Asia. Newsom, always hungry for the spotlight, is quick to slap the label “gas station heroin” on anything he doesn’t understand. This latest crusade is another dramatic show for the cameras, while California’s real problems—rampant crime, addiction, homelessness—keep getting worse.
Instead of tackling the fentanyl crisis destroying California’s communities, Newsom is going after kratom, a leaf. Yes, a plant. Not Big Pharma’s deadly opioids, not the criminals peddling fentanyl on the streets, but an affordable herbal alternative used by many for pain and anxiety. That’s liberal logic: attack legal, natural remedies but ignore the wide-open border flooding our cities with dangerous drugs.
Why is Newsom so eager to ban kratom? It’s almost like he wants to keep the state in the pockets of global pharmaceutical companies. Liberals always say they’re for personal freedom—unless that freedom means making your own choices about your health. Suddenly, Sacramento wants to protect you from yourself, but not from the violent criminals out on zero bail.
Many Americans turn to kratom because greedy drug companies and their Democrat enablers have made prescription medicine expensive and hard to get. Now Newsom and his friends would rather trash a centuries-old remedy than admit their own policies are a disaster. Newsom doesn’t care about safety—he cares about optics, power, and pleasing party donors.
Newsom’s so-called war on “gas station heroin” is nothing but an empty victory dance, celebrating before the fight even starts. If he spent half as much energy fixing California as he does chasing headlines, maybe the state wouldn’t be falling apart. Why don’t Democrats ever target the real threats? Or is that too much work for an out-of-touch governor with bigger ambitions than common sense?
