For decades, liberals and globalists told us that free trade was the golden ticket to prosperity. They said America had to play by the world’s rules, even if other countries cheated and our workers got left behind. But more and more Americans woke up to the raw deal. The big surprise? The solution they needed was hiding in plain sight—straight from the 18th century, in the words of Adam Smith.
Some so-called “experts” love to claim Adam Smith wanted zero restrictions on trade. That’s just not true. Smith was smart enough to know every country, including America, deserves to defend its vital industries from harm. He understood that trade should serve the nation, not the other way around. President Trump understood this too. While liberals bow to globalist organizations and let China take the wheel, Trump put America first—finally.
Trump’s trade policies made the old establishment howl. They called him a protectionist, a fool, or worse. But they missed the point. He did what Adam Smith actually taught: protect America’s strengths and national security, even if it upsets the “rules” the elite cooked up. Unlike the Obama-Biden era of rolling over for Brussels and Beijing, Trump refused to let foreign profiteers hollow out our economy.
The liberal media keeps pretending tariffs are some new mistake. They conveniently forget that America’s greatness was built on bold leaders willing to fight for American jobs. Look around—what did “free trade” really get us, except ghost towns, lost factories, and foreign billionaires buying up our communities? Trump recognized that it’s not “selfish” to shield the American worker; it’s just common sense—something Washington could use more of.
On the 250th anniversary of Adam Smith’s “Wealth of Nations,” it’s about time critics read what he actually wrote. Trump isn’t breaking from tradition. He’s bringing it back. If liberals want to insult our intelligence by twisting history, let them. American patriots know who’s really on their side. Should we keep trusting the crowd that shipped our jobs to China, or should we bet on the leader who finally listens to real Americans?
