Why Washington Is Letting Your Vote Get Stolen and How Red States Are Failing to Stop It

The SAVE America Act is the most important bill no one in Washington wants to fight for. It would finally demand that people prove they’re actual citizens when they register—imagine that! And it would make voters show real identification before stepping into the booth. You’d think protecting the vote would be a no-brainer. But, with politicians in the Senate already throwing in the towel, this common-sense bill is likely heading to the graveyard. Too many in the so-called “conservative” camp would rather complain about Senate rules than actually protect our democracy from the left’s dirty tricks.

If Americans can’t rely on their representatives to get the job done in D.C., then thank God for red states stepping up. Or at least, that’s the impression leaders want to give. When you scratch beneath the surface, though, you’ll find that even the most “secure” state voting systems are filled with loopholes you could drive a bus through. Take Texas, for example. Voters brag about their tough voter ID laws, but the truth is far from tough. Show up to vote without any photo ID? No problem—they’ll accept a utility bill or a bank statement. Just fill out some paperwork, and you’re in. What difference do these weak rules really make? An actual illegal immigrant was caught voting in Texas. What does that tell you about the strength of these so-called safeguards?

And it’s not just Texas. The weakness runs deep through red America. More than a dozen states pretend to be tough on voter integrity, but they allow all sorts of junk as ID. In Tennessee, Nebraska, Louisiana, South Carolina, Idaho, South Dakota, and Indiana—places where Republicans run the show—there are back doors wide open for anyone determined enough to sneak through. Expired IDs, pieces of mail, or a pay stub can get you a ballot. This isn’t election security; it’s a bad joke.

The left will never stop trying to water down our elections. They push “voter rights” as a smokescreen, but everyone knows their goal is to win by any means necessary—legal or not. Americans have heard enough empty talk about “norms” and “decorum” from the GOP elite, who seem more interested in keeping their beltway friends happy than fighting for actual voters. If they were serious, they’d force a national voting standard. The SAVE America Act could do it, if only the Senate had the backbone to break out of the D.C. circus.

How much longer are we supposed to play nice while the other side tramples the rules? Conservatives should remember this: It’s time to secure the vote or lose the country. When will the spineless Republicans wake up and realize that American democracy isn’t a game? If we don’t get strict voter ID laws—real ones—soon, what’s left to defend?
