It’s hard to believe, but only in California could a major debate for the next governor get scrapped because there were “too many white people on stage.” That’s right: forget free speech, ignore the idea that the best man or woman should win, and toss any hope for a good old-fashioned debate right out the window. All that mattered to the woke university and the angry mob was skin color. Merit? Accomplishments? Voters’ actual preferences? Sorry, that stuff doesn’t make headlines for the social justice crowd.
At the University of Southern California, the stage was set for a big debate. Two Republicans and several Democrats—otherwise known as the top contenders—all made the cut. Why? Because they were leading in the polls, plain and simple. But apparently, that was a crime. Some noisy activists had a meltdown because the chosen candidates were all—brace yourself—white. Suddenly, the debate organizers lost their nerve. They folded to the outrage brigade and called the whole thing off, less than 24 hours before showtime.
This wasn’t because of a bomb threat. It wasn’t about security, or even about a fair contest. It was about checking diversity boxes, like a twisted game of political bingo. Instead of letting voters hear from the real frontrunners, the university panicked over who wasn’t invited, mainly because the excluded crowd just happened to be non-white. Never mind that those folks weren’t polling well or barely even registering with voters. In today’s California, being popular with Democrats counts for less than having the right skin color for the photo ops.
Make no mistake—this is what happens when the left runs the show. Competence goes out the window, and all that matters is identity politics. If a non-white candidate can’t get any traction in a field packed with Democrats, maybe they should work harder or come up with some real ideas, instead of demanding a participation trophy. But the liberal elite would rather cancel the debate and silence the entire process, just to avoid bad optics.
It’s also laughable that the same party screaming about “saving democracy” are the ones killing it—by shutting down debate and muzzling frontrunners because of their race. The truth is, California voters don’t care about racial quotas; they care about who’s right for the job. This obsession with race over results is exactly why common-sense Americans are fed up with the radical left’s agenda. Maybe next time Democrats hold a debate, they’ll just skip the voters altogether and hand-pick their favorite color swatch. Is this the future liberals want?
