The National Park Service is finally reopening the North Rim of the Grand Canyon after shutting it down for months thanks to a massive wildfire. Over 145,000 acres were scorched this summer, and now, as things calm down, bureaucrats in Washington pat themselves on the back instead of actually learning anything from what went wrong. A lightning strike on Independence Day—of all days—sparked the fire, but let’s be honest: wildfires get out of control because of decades of terrible liberal policies, not Mother Nature acting up.
For years, radical environmentalists have bullied the government into letting brush and dead trees pile up. They wring their hands about every endangered bird, but they don’t lift a finger for the millions of Americans who want to enjoy their own country’s treasures. The result? Out-of-control fires that destroy hundreds of thousands of acres while local families and businesses suffer. These so-called green policies create nothing but black soot and empty, useless land.
While elites in DC virtue-signal about “protecting nature,” the land burns. Firefighters finally, after weeks and weeks, managed to contain the flames, but only after the damage was already done. And now we have to listen to the same government that let it get this bad tell us how they’re opening things up, as if that’s some sort of gift. Regular hard-working Americans pay taxes for these parks—why does the government act like they own them?
Don’t expect the usual crowd of environmental activists or their buddies in the media to admit fault. They’ll blame “climate change” just like they always do. They refuse to take any responsibility for fuelling these disasters with their fancy buzzwords and disastrous forest mismanagement. If they really cared about America’s natural beauty, they would stop regulating land to death and start using common sense.
Maybe next time, instead of worshipping at the altar of green politics, the government should listen to actual Americans, use smart logging, and keep our parks open and healthy. Is that too much to ask in the so-called land of the free?
