California proved once again that the state’s political circus is alive and well. Wednesday’s gubernatorial debate unfolded just as expected—another round of tired liberal talking points and sky-high promises that any working person knows can’t possibly happen. Skipping the whole sad spectacle was tempting, but watching these so-called “leaders” try to one-up each other on who could bankrupt California faster was like watching a car crash in slow motion. It’s good to know there are at least a few real reporters still willing to witness it—all so you don’t have to.
After Eric Swalwell’s political career hit the eject button—with scandal and disgrace at Mach-5 speed, no less—the debate stage saw six candidates who actually made the cut. That’s only because they manage to scrape up five percent in polls, proving yet again just how little is required to “stand out” if you’re running as a Democrat. Voters are supposed to get excited about the same recycled names and career politicians, like Matt Mahan from San Jose and yet another Biden administration leftover, Xavier Becerra. This isn’t democracy—it’s a rerun, and everyone’s sick of it.
The hypocrisy on that stage was thick enough to choke. These Democrats cry about “protecting families” while their policies made California unaffordable for working people. They talk tough on crime as criminals run wild and hard-working families flee the state. After years of failed liberal leadership, homelessness is exploding, taxes are through the roof, and the rich are the only ones who can afford to live in the cities they’re destroying. The same crew who bent the knee to lockdown fanatics and globalist interests now want us to trust them with even more power? That’s a real joke.
Watching the debate, it was clear: nobody offered any real solutions. Instead, it was a contest to see who could promise the most “free” stuff, paid for by—you guessed it—the already-overburdened taxpayer. They weren’t debating how to make California safer or more prosperous. They were fighting over who gets to take your freedoms away next. The only thing more laughable than their empty promises was the way they tried to paint themselves as champions of the people, while lining up at the trough of political favors and union handouts.
If this is the best California has to offer, it’s no wonder the state is circling the drain. Maybe it’s time for real leadership, instead of self-serving, virtue-signaling Democrats recycling failed ideas. When will Californians finally wake up and say enough is enough?
