Gavin Newsom is at it again, patting himself on the back for so-called “job growth” in California. He’s busy crowing all over social media, chest-thumping about the Golden State adding over 100,000 jobs this year. But any honest American can see through this shallow bragging. When you’re the governor of the largest state in the country, boasting about leading in total job numbers means absolutely nothing. It’s like taking credit for having more blades of grass than your neighbor—newsflash, the yard is bigger!
Dig deeper and the truth is far more embarrassing. California is lagging behind when it comes to real, meaningful job growth. States with fewer residents, and way less media attention, are running circles around California on a per-person basis. Nevada and North Carolina, for example, are sprinting ahead with job growth that leaves Newsom’s California in the dust. Meanwhile, the supposed innovation capital of America is crawling along at just over two jobs per 1,000 people.
What’s dragging California down? It’s the endless mountain of liberal red tape and government overreach. The politicians who run the state have loaded businesses with suffocating regulations. If you’re a small business owner, the costs and headaches just to hire a single worker are laughably high. Energy mandates, wage laws, picky compliance rules, and restrictions on how you can even find talent—these aren’t making life better for working families. They’re making California the poster child for how to kill off real opportunity.
All this noise about job creation is just a smokescreen anyway. California’s unemployment rate is stuck above the rest of the country. People are still out of work while Newsom polishes his ego. The so-called success stories he likes to parade around were set in motion long before he took office, built on the backs of risk-takers and entrepreneurs who did it despite government, not because of it.
Is this really the California dream that Newsom and his liberal pals want to keep selling? A giant bureaucracy, fake running victory laps, while real Americans are held back by big-government nonsense? Maybe instead of bragging, it’s time the Left starts learning from states that are actually winning.
