That’s way above Congress’s own threshold, which is supposed to cap this disaster at six percent. Yet once again, bureaucrats hand out our money with barely a nod to accountability.
This isn’t just some accounting fluke. That $10.1 billion in improper payments didn’t fall from the sky. It’s from reckless leadership at the state level, including the same blue states that scream “compassion” while bleeding taxpayers dry. Alaska missed the mark by a country mile with a shocking 23 percent error rate. Washington, D.C., the beating heart of government bloat, clocked in at nearly 19 percent. Oregon and Minnesota weren’t far behind. It’s always the states desperate to virtue signal about feeding the poor who can’t manage basic math—or maybe that’s exactly the point.
And don’t fall for the line that these are just honest mistakes. Under the surface, there’s a wave of fraud: look no further than nearly a thousand people recently caught stealing from the SNAP program, some using hundreds of stolen identities. That’s money siphoned away from real families who actually need help. Instead, it’s padding the wallets of scammers and fueling more bureaucracy. Liberal leaders shrug and blame the system, but only when it’s their own policies caught red-handed.
The feds are finally waking up—a little. New rules mean states who mess up will have to pony up a percentage of their own benefits if they can’t keep errors below six percent. But why was this allowed to spiral so far out of control in the first place? Why did it take years of abuse and incompetence before anyone in Washington had the guts to say “enough”?
