California Democrats have come up with a new way to ruin something great: tax the wine industry over some made-up crisis. Instead of fixing real problems in their state, they’re going after winemakers with a bogus new groundwater tax. And the best part? Most of these winemakers aren’t even causing the so-called problem. Reality check: the water “crisis” California claims to solve is about as real as their so-called budget surplus.
Let’s be honest — this has nothing to do with saving water and everything to do with Democrats’ favorite game: punishing businesses and average Americans for the sins of Big Government. Sacramento elites won’t be hurt by a tax on the wineries. It’s the hard-working vineyard owners and, yes, people from across the country who just wanted to enjoy a nice glass of California red.
Instead of real leadership, California politicians reach for one tool: more taxes. Groundwater issues? Tax the winemakers! Homelessness exploding? Tax the middle class! This is what happens when the Left runs wild with no one left to blame — except, of course, climate change or greedy business owners. Of course, liberal lawmakers themselves will keep sipping their fine wine in upscale neighborhoods, untouched by their own nonsense.
What’s worse, many of the wineries targeted by this tax are responsible stewards of their land and water. They don’t abuse the groundwater supply. But that doesn’t matter to the Democrats. The narrative always comes first. If it hurts small businesses, local jobs, or American traditions, so be it. The wine lovers in the rest of the country get slammed with higher prices for no reason at all, as if punishing out-of-state Americans solves California’s self-inflicted wounds.
California used to be the American dream. Now, it’s a field test for socialist experiments that never work. Maybe the Democrats in Sacramento should spend less time inventing new taxes and more time fixing the disasters they’ve already caused. At this rate, the only thing aging gracefully in California will be their hypocrisy—certainly not their wine.
