Washington slams brakes on New York Medicaid fraud unit after years of waste and liberal failure

For years, New Yorkers have watched their hard-earned tax dollars disappear into a black hole of waste and fraud. Now, the federal government has finally had enough. Washington just pulled the plug on tens of millions in funding for New York’s so-called Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The reason is simple: this massive government office, fat with nearly 300 employees and a $60 million annual budget, has completely failed to protect the public from con artists and criminals.

While other big states crack down on Medicaid fraudsters—and rake in hundreds of indictments every year—New York can barely scrape together a dozen. It’s an absolute embarrassment. And please, don’t blame lack of resources. No, this is classic liberal incompetence at work, enabled by the leadership of Attorney General Letitia James. Instead of actually investigating criminals, her office got bogged down in red tape, letting cases rot on the shelf and letting thousands of tips go ignored. Was this about fighting fraud, or protecting the corrupt system that feeds the Albany swamp?

Leftist politicians love to brag about “program integrity” and “protecting the vulnerable,” but the numbers tell a different story. Under James’s watchful eye, the Unit’s criminal enforcement collapsed. The flood of patient abuse and neglect reports—over 2,000 every year—barely made a ripple. Convictions all but vanished. Meanwhile, criminals kept on looting one of the largest welfare programs in America. So what did Letitia James do? She tried to point to big, vague “civil recoveries” and take a victory lap. But hiding behind fuzzy stats won’t erase this track record of total failure.

The message is clear: the far-left agenda may demand unchecked spending, but it never delivers accountability. If New York’s political elites can’t even keep criminals out of taxpayer-funded healthcare, what else are they turning a blind eye to? The left talks a big game about fighting for the little guy, but under their rule, the only people getting “justice” are the fraudsters.

The federal government finally had to take the keys away. Imagine that—Washington bureaucrats had to tell New York to stop wasting money on a useless fraud unit. If Democrats can’t run Medicaid without turning it into a criminal’s playground, why should anyone trust them with a single dollar more? America deserves leaders who will actually defend the taxpayers, not just help their well-connected friends cash in. If New York’s leaders can’t get this right, what hope is there for the rest of the country?
