While liberal pundits will praise international committees and so-called “global health partnerships,” it’s undeniable—most of the medicines saving lives right now are coming straight from the United States.

That latest Ebola outbreak in the Congo? The medicine wasn’t some creation of a global task force or European bureaucrat. The truth is, the real breakthroughs come from gutsy American businesses, like that San Diego company fighting Ebola. Foundations, red tape, and empty promises don’t make vaccines. Determined American research and investment do. That’s the private sector—moving fast while government is stuck in neutral.

Liberals love to complain about “big pharma,” but when the world faces a killer virus, it’s those same American drug companies that everyone depends on. While left-wing politicians bash capitalism and cry for socialized healthcare, it’s American capitalism that keeps the world healthy. China, Japan, the UK, and Switzerland are on the leaderboard too, but notice the pattern: The top sources for drug innovation are wealthy, free, capitalist societies, not socialist utopias.

These organizations would barely have anything to distribute without the medicines invented in the United States. Liberals’ fantasies about a borderless world of fairness don’t save lives—American research, competition, and hard work do.
