Growing up in the Soviet Union meant wanting was dangerous. That’s what real socialism does—it kills dreams, crushes ambition, and teaches you to accept what you’re given. Escape was almost impossible, hope even more so. But America has always stood for something better.
That’s the lesson so many forget today. While leftists and their pals in academia tell our kids to “settle for less,” to apologize for wanting too much, there are still people who risk everything for the chance to dream. Imagine landing in New York as a six-year-old refugee, not speaking a word of English, carrying just a single suitcase. Instead of being held down by the past, this child found a country ready to soar—the America of the 1980s.
Liberals love to bash those years as greedy. But what those critics don’t get is that ambition is the lifeblood of freedom. The music on the radio during that unapologetic decade wasn’t about feeling sorry for yourself. It was about pushing forward, against all odds, building something greater, and celebrating success—not hiding from it. Where the Soviet system punished achievement and accused anyone who stood out of “selfishness,” America showed kids that wanting more isn’t a sin; it’s survival.
Today, that spirit is under attack. The woke mob does everything it can to snuff out personal ambition and the idea that striving for more is good. They want us to feel guilty about what we have, ashamed of our history, and eager to hand power over to globalist elites who never earned a thing in their lives. But guess what? Americans aren’t buying the defeatist message. Not those of us who remember what real oppression looks like.
It’s noble to want things. Wanting is what lifts people out of poverty. Only in America do former refugees become citizens, build families, and chase dreams without fear of government punishment. Liberals want to erase that feeling—quiet that hunger—because they can’t control people who believe in themselves. But this nation was built by dreamers and fighters, not bureaucrats and scolds.
So next time someone tells you it’s wrong to want more, remember that America is proof they’re dead wrong. The left wants dependence. True Americans want freedom—and the guts to chase it. Isn’t it obvious which side deserves to win?
