Democrats are Turning America Into a Government Jobs Factory and Your Wallet Pays the Price

Democrats Don’t Want an Economy—They Want a Government Paycheck Factory

It’s clearer than ever: to Democrats, the American economy isn’t about innovation or freedom. It’s just a gigantic jobs program. Forget the free market. Forget unleashing technology or competing globally. The left wants to keep everything frozen in time, as long as their union buddies keep getting paychecks and the government keeps pulling the strings.

Take a look at what happened in Rhode Island this June. The Democrat governor signed a law forcing stores to keep one actual cashier for every three self-checkout machines. And the people supervising self-checkout? They’re not allowed to do anything else. It’s pure, bureaucratic insanity, designed to force jobs into existence instead of letting businesses operate efficiently. Who gets hurt? Shoppers and business owners. The left couldn’t care less. They’d rather treat the private sector like it’s some New Deal make-work project.

This kind of thinking infects everything. It’s in the debates about artificial intelligence, where progressives rush to pass laws blocking AI because they think automation is evil if it might threaten someone’s job. Instead of preparing workers for the future, these politicians are terrified of any change—even the kind of change that’s made America the greatest country on earth. They assume the number of jobs today is the number that should exist forever. If a new machine, or some software, does something faster or cheaper, liberals see it as a crisis instead of a blessing.

Look at manufacturing and shipping, too. Unions and their Democrat lapdogs twist arms to block automation at ports, not because it’s unsafe, but because it allows goods to move smoothly with fewer people manning the post. When companies like Amazon want to innovate with robotics in warehouses, some lawmakers try to micromanage them with so-called “technology displacement” bills. The message is simple: efficiency is unwelcome. Progress is the enemy. The only thing that counts is preserving obsolete jobs, even if that means costs go up and America falls behind Chinese competition.

This is pure economic backwardness. Instead of encouraging people to learn new skills or start better careers, the left spends its time protecting jobs that might disappear, while ignoring the new industries and opportunities that technology creates. It’s as if they’d rather we all dig ditches with spoons instead of using real tools, just so everyone gets a paycheck.

Americans have a choice. Trust the free market, or let government bureaucrats decide who works and who doesn’t. Liberals pretend they’re not socialists, but every time they freeze progress to “protect jobs,” they’re inching us closer to the very socialism that left entire nations in poverty and misery. When did we stop being a country of builders and pioneers, and start letting union bosses and clueless bureaucrats run the show? Maybe it’s time to ask who the real enemies of innovation are—and what they’re really afraid of.
