When the numbers look ugly for New York City’s public schools, you can count on union bosses like Mike Mulgrew to start pointing fingers. Instead of owning up to failure, he’s busy shifting blame onto others—this time, it’s Mamdani, an easy scapegoat for the city’s plummeting reading scores. This isn’t leadership. It’s cowardly politics, and our kids are paying the price.
The news is shocking, but not surprising. English test scores for students in grades 3 through 8 have crashed—down six percent from last year. It’s even worse for the littlest learners. More than half of the city’s third, fourth, and fifth graders can’t even read at a basic level. This isn’t just a blip. It’s a disaster, caused by years of liberal policies that put union power and political games ahead of actual education.
The teachers’ union has run the show for decades, propped up by left-wing politicians and bureaucrats who care more about their own influence than what happens in the classroom. Now, with record numbers of children struggling just to read, suddenly they want to pass the blame to someone else. They play the “not our fault” card so often, you’d think they invented the deck. Where’s the accountability? Where’s the outrage from City Hall? All we get are excuses.
Liberal leaders love to talk about equity and social justice, but when real results are demanded, their system falls apart. Scores go down, but their paychecks keep going up. Instead of fixing broken curricula or rooting out bad teachers, they attack political opponents and try to distract the public. All the while, kids—especially those from working-class families—are left behind, doomed by a system rigged against achievement and personal responsibility.
New York’s children deserve better than this. When the adults in charge keep failing, shifting blame, and cashing in, maybe it’s time voters start asking: How many more generations have to be sacrificed on the altar of liberal incompetence?
