The Iowa governor’s race got its first real spark last night—thanks to Republican candidate Zach Lahn’s no-nonsense approach in the debate. Lahn faced a tired, old-school Democrat attack from Rob Sand, who once again tried to paint a successful conservative as somehow “not from here.” The crowd saw right through that trick. Sand, the state auditor and a man married into big liberal money, decided to take shots about residency rather than talk about the issues that matter to everyday Iowans. It blew up in his face.
Here’s what the left doesn’t get: you can’t shame or intimidate a real Iowan for having family and priorities outside of politics. Lahn’s family, like so many across the country, is modern and blended. He travels, not because he’s running from Iowa, but because he’s building a life for his children—not padding a political résumé or hiding behind his rich wife’s coattails, like Sand.
Liberals always go after the things that don’t matter because they have nothing to offer. Instead of sharing plans to lower taxes or make Iowa safe, Sand tried to smear a patriotic Iowan who’s actually lived what most families are living—juggling work, responsibility, and family. It’s classic Democrat behavior: if you can’t win on the issues, start a whisper campaign and hope nobody notices how empty your promises are.
And let’s not forget the shameless hypocrisy. Sand, who loves to claim he understands the average Iowan, has plenty of support from his wife’s deep pockets. Funny how Democrats love to screech about “privilege” until it’s their own elite status. Regular Iowans see right through these double standards. They want someone who actually knows Iowa and embodies our values—not another silver spoon political climber who uses family wealth as a stepping stone.
Zach Lahn showed guts and integrity last night. He didn’t dodge, flinch, or whine—he fired right back with facts and pride. That’s exactly the kind of leadership Iowa deserves. Maybe if Democrats spent half as much time solving real problems as they do researching personal attacks, they wouldn’t be losing middle America. But then again, competence has never been their strong suit.
