France, the so-called champion of high-minded liberal ideals, is burning yet again. After a weekend of chaos and destruction, French police have been forced to lock down entire neighborhoods in Paris with strict curfews. That’s right—leaders who once bragged about their enlightened tolerance are now scrambling to protect their own streets with police power. It’s what you get when government refuses to get tough on crime and coddles violent agitators.
These curfews aren’t just for show. From 11 p.m. until 6 a.m., parts of Paris will go into total shutdown. Over a dozen areas across the city face harsh new restrictions. Why? Because politicians have allowed lawlessness to spread like wildfire. While the so-called elites sip their wine, regular citizens pay the price, trapped in their own homes for fear of more rioting.
It’s absurd that the same liberal politicians who rail against “authoritarianism” in America now cling to strict curfews and police crackdowns in their own backyard. When things get out of hand, they love big government—and that’s the real hypocrisy. They would rather punish everyone than admit they failed to keep criminals in check. Notice how nobody is talking about supporting the police until their own cities are under siege.

If France’s leaders can’t even keep their capital safe, why should we listen to their lectures about freedom and democracy?
