California can’t stop bragging about its massive $400 billion teachers’ pension fund. Leftist politicians pat themselves on the back, acting like this is some kind of financial triumph. They love to tout numbers and wave around big dollar signs. But here’s the harsh truth—despite all that cash, their pension fund isn’t even close to covering what they owe. Not even after a hot bull market. As of 2025, it’s still stuck limping along at just 79 percent of its actual obligations.
That means tens of billions are missing. Where did all that money go? California rakes in taxes, squeezes every working citizen, and yet the so-called “financial experts” in charge can’t balance basic math. This is what happens when liberal big government runs wild—promising the world, while never delivering the basics. The left keeps handing out gold-plated retirement deals, never caring if the math adds up, because they’re spending other people’s money.
Every year, politicians in Sacramento push for bigger budgets, more social experiments, and endless regulations. They pay off their union buddies with lush pensions, then act surprised when the bill comes due. Classic liberal hypocrisy—pretend to care about the little guy, but set up a ticking time bomb that’s bound to blow up in the faces of hard-working Californians. California lawmakers are more interested in pushing costly, globalist pet projects and virtue-signaling on climate than they are in making sure these pension funds don’t run dry.
Maybe if the people in charge spent their days actually managing pensions instead of pandering for Hollywood applause, California teachers wouldn’t have to worry about their retirements. But no, Sacramento Democrats would rather pander to special interests and line their own pockets, all while ordinary families get stuck holding the bag.
The numbers don’t lie—79 percent isn’t enough. Only in liberal fantasyland is that called a “success.” If this is the best the blue state model can offer, no wonder so many Americans are packing up and heading out. Why should taxpayers keep funding broken promises and bloated pensions when the folks in charge can’t even do basic arithmetic? Maybe it’s time California learns how the rest of America—responsible, hard-working, and honest—manages their money.
