Once again, an American life hangs in the balance overseas—and the incompetence from Washington is on full display. This time, it’s a freelance journalist, Shelly Kittleson, kidnapped right in Baghdad. While the U.S. State Department rushes out statements and talks a big game about “working with authorities,” Americans know all too well what usually happens next: bureaucratic foot-dragging, empty platitudes, and excuses.
Let’s be clear: this dangerous situation didn’t come out of nowhere. The left’s soft approach to foreign policy has turned the Middle East into a playground for thugs and terrorists. When the Biden administration floods the region with weakness instead of strength, it’s no surprise that our citizens are snatched and held like bargaining chips. Just look at Afghanistan. The world watched as Americans were left behind and abandoned. Now, Iraq is feeling just as chaotic and dangerous, especially for U.S. nationals.
We hear talk about the State Department “fulfilling its duty-to-warn obligations.” But what good does a warning do if the U.S. refuses to project true power, laying down red lines and then actually enforcing them? The real warning should be to kidnappers: if you dare mess with American citizens, you will pay a price. Instead, under this administration, it’s our people who end up paying and the bad guys who get bolder—emboldened by indecisive globalist leadership and appeasement.
Here’s a question for the liberals running our foreign policy: why are Americans forced to count on the goodwill of foreign police, foreign governments, and—let’s be honest—people who don’t share our values or interests? America should demand respect and ensure that no one, anywhere, ever thinks they can touch a hair on our citizens’ heads without relentless consequences. But standing up for Americans seems like a thing of the past—at least when the left’s in charge.
If American strength isn’t restored, these kidnappings will happen more and more. The world can smell weakness a mile away. While D.C. is busy patting itself on the back for “raising awareness” and “fulfilling obligations,” Americans are getting left behind. So here’s the real question: will we ever get leadership that actually puts Americans first—or are we settling for another round of empty promises while our citizens pay the price?
