The news out of the Middle East this week is a wake-up call to anyone paying attention. After months of brutal attacks, the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia actually spoke on the phone. Yes, you read that right. The same Iran that has been raining bombs on Saudi Arabia and its allies since March is now suddenly playing diplomat. The left loves to talk about “dialogue.” But when terrorists pick up the phone, is anyone really surprised the Biden administration celebrates it?
Let’s get real. Iran, the world’s top sponsor of terror, spent the spring launching strikes across the region. They’ve made no secret of their hatred for the West and for our allies. For years, American leadership (especially under weak-kneed Democrats) bent over backwards to “reset” relations with the same regime that chants death to America. And what has it gotten us? Bombed oil fields, dead Saudis, chaos everywhere—and now, a phone call hailed as progress.
What no one on the left will admit is that these “talks” are only happening because Iran thinks it’s won. Why back down now when the so-called global order looks the other way? When the White House is more interested in climate summits than keeping the peace? The world watches as Saudi Arabia, a crucial partner in the fight against extremism, is forced to negotiate with its enemy simply to stop the bleeding.
Liberal elites love to daydream about “peace in our time.” They believe groveling to dictators will make the world safer. The reality is, appeasement only encourages aggression. Does anyone think Iran is having second thoughts about targeting Americans or our allies? Or are they just buying time until the next attack?
This is the cost of American weakness abroad. When the world’s police walks off the beat, the thugs come out to play. Maybe the left will finally learn: strength keeps the peace, not empty words and phone calls. But then again, when have liberals ever learned from history?
