Americans are constantly told by the left that Cuba’s misery is all because of U.S. sanctions. But the truth keeps slipping out—and brave people willing to expose it put themselves in real danger. Just look at what happened to Nick Shirley. He went to Cuba without the regime’s blessing and nearly got tossed in a jail cell—or worse. His so-called crime? Trying to show the world what life really looks like after decades of communism.

Forget the fairytale tours left-wing influencers take with government guides, sipping cocktails in fancy hotels and parroting the state’s talking points. When someone like Shirley steps off the plane, the welcome is very different. Cuban agents were waiting for him, snatching up his gear and stalking him like prey every step of the way. They weren’t worried about “blockades” or “sanctions.” They were terrified someone might tell the truth about communist oppression.

But the left doesn’t want you to hear stories like Shirley’s. When their favorite socialist commentator waltzed through the island, he wasn’t stripped of his comforts or threatened by secret police. Of course not. He echoed whatever the regime wanted him to say—blaming America, not communism, for Cuba’s endless blackouts and poverty. That’s the kind of “journalism” dictatorships love—they roll out the red carpet as long as you prop up their lies.

Meanwhile, brave souls who won’t play along—especially if they have a camera—get harassed, silenced, or thrown behind bars. Does the left care? Hardly. Instead, they attack anyone who dares to risk their own safety to reveal the truth, calling them names and accusing them of propaganda. That’s how deeply the progressive media-industrial complex is in bed with anti-American regimes.

Maybe it’s time to ask why the left and their international pals are so eager to stand up for tyrants and so hostile to those risking everything for freedom. If Cuba is such a paradise, why are cameras and free speech so dangerous? The answer isn’t hard: in socialist utopias, the truth is the biggest threat of all.
