Thanks to crooked readings of the Commerce Clause, Congress and its bureaucrats claim they can regulate anything they want—your farm, your backyard, maybe even your family dinner. All it takes is chanting that magic word: “commerce.” Suddenly, anything you make or grow, no matter where or for whom, lands in big government’s crosshairs. Liberals love it. But Justice Thomas never bought into this con. He saw that the Founders wrote limits into the Constitution for a reason. It’s embarrassing how little respect liberals have for real American values. They talk a big game about “choice” and “freedom,” but look closer—every one of their schemes gives the federal government more control and the individual less. The marijuana debate just proves the point. They want pot smoking to be a sacred right, but let a state pass a law bucking D.C.? Suddenly, “states’ rights” are evil. The hypocrisy is stunning.
Justice Thomas reminds us that freedom isn’t complicated. The Constitution draws clear lines. Congress ought to stay inside them. Americans don’t want some out-of-touch federal overlord telling them what to do, what to grow, or even how to think. If only more Justices—and politicians—had the guts to say enough is enough. When will the left learn that government is supposed to serve the people, not smother them?
