Newsom’s identity contract scheme lets fake LGBT companies cash in while real problems grow

It looks like Gavin Newsom has finally found a type of fraud he’s willing to fight—and it’s exactly the kind his own policies encourage. California’s government is now pushing public utilities to hand out more than $600 million in contract work to companies that claim to be LGBT-owned. Yes, you read that right. No focus on getting power bills down, no priority on fixing decaying power lines—just a headhunt for contractors who can tick the “correct” identity boxes.

It’s the classic California shell game. Liberals running the state government act like identity is all that matters. Forget skills, forget experience, and especially forget how taxpayer money is being wasted. Instead, Newsom and his crew have cooked up a system where companies can claim they’re LGBT-owned and cash in big, with hardly any oversight on how anyone is actually proving it. It’s somehow easier for the government to figure out who sleeps with whom than to keep criminals off the streets or clean up rampant drug use.

How does a business even “prove” it’s LGBT-owned? Does California now expect contractors to provide personal details or parade private preferences for a government payout? Maybe soon there’ll be an official rainbow certification process—unless, of course, someone just checks a box and calls it a day. It’s another gold rush for grifters, and once again, the hardworking middle class is left footing the bill.

This is what happens when identity politics takes over everything. Instead of demanding results, liberals reward the right buzzwords. But when it suits them, like with this absurd contracting scheme, suddenly they get tough on fraud. Not voter fraud, not welfare fraud, not the avalanche of scams bleeding this state every day—just the so-called risk of straight guys pretending they’re “gay for pay.” It would be hilarious if it weren’t so pathetic.

Californians are tired of Newsom’s games. While real families struggle with staggering inflation, taxes, and crime, Sacramento fiddles with paperwork about who ticks what box. Leave it to liberals to invent a fraud so silly even they can’t keep a straight face—then act shocked when it backfires. If this is the leadership Democrats think America should follow, the joke’s on us.
