Once again, New York City’s never-ending migrant crisis has gone from a “humanitarian emergency” to a golden ticket for greedy insiders and corrupt officials to line their pockets. Federal prosecutors have just peeled back the curtain on a stunning scheme to profit off the taxpayers while so-called leaders claimed to be “solving” a crisis entirely of their own making. Four suspects—two of whom worked as top city attorneys—are now facing the consequences. Who’s surprised? Only those who still trust big government to spend our money wisely.
The facts are enraging. As waves of migrants swamped NYC’s overwhelmed shelter system—thanks to open borders and a leftist “right to shelter” law that rewards illegal entry—the big brains running city agencies funneled nearly two billion dollars in federal cash to emergency hotel contracts. Instead of helping the vulnerable, powerful insiders turned this crisis into a business opportunity. Political connections—not need—decided who cashed in.
One brother, Frank Carone, became the poster boy for pay-to-play politics. Using his position as the mayor’s chief of staff, he allegedly twisted city arms to award a sweetheart shelter contract to a hotel owned by another insider—only after hundreds of thousands in bribes landed in the right bank accounts. It didn’t even matter that city experts had already decided the hotel wasn’t fit to house migrants. What mattered was greasing the right palms and scratching the backs of well-placed allies. The rest of us just get the bill.
And get this—the people accused of orchestrating this scam are lawyers, sworn to uphold the law, who instead created an elaborate shell game to hide dirty money, evade taxes, and cover their tracks when the feds started sniffing around. They even faked backdated documents to try to fool investigators. So much for “integrity.” So much for “helping refugees.” What do principled Democrats in charge do? They keep pretending these scandals are just “one-offs” instead of business as usual.
Let’s tell the truth: This is a preview of what happens under left-wing, big-government “solutions” to problems they love to exploit. Throw billions of taxpayer dollars into a crisis, then watch the vultures descend, all while the working families of America pay more and get less. Are we really supposed to believe this is how compassion works? Or is it just another chapter in the endless saga of liberal incompetence and self-dealing? At what point do Americans stop trusting these so-called public servants and start demanding that swamp creatures go to jail?
