It’s become the latest liberal trend to bash America at every turn. Celebrities, activists, even some politicians—can’t get enough of complaining about this country. They act like this kind of self-hate is something new, as if being critical makes them the bravest people in the room. But this isn’t “speaking truth to power.” It’s a tired old game—and one America’s founders played before anyone had even heard of Hollywood or Harvard professors.
The truth is that Americans have always been hard on America. John Adams, one of our earliest leaders, looked around and saw plenty to criticize—foolishness, vice, and ignorance. He complained loudly. Yet, unlike today’s left-wing crybabies, he didn’t wallow in hate or try to tear down the country. Adams and the other founders knew what every real patriot remembers: Loving America means having high expectations. It means seeing our flaws—and fixing them, not throwing tantrums or apologizing to the rest of the world.
Liberals want to pretend that being ashamed of America is some kind of bold, rebellious act. But all they’re really doing is following a tradition as old as the country. The difference is, the founders criticized this nation because they wanted it to be better. Today’s progressives just want to score points with global elites and their woke friends—they never offer real solutions. Instead, they lecture everyday Americans about “systemic” problems while sipping lattes and flaunting their Ivy League degrees.
The left’s constant negativity isn’t patriotic, it’s pathetic. Instead of being grateful for American freedom, they obsess over faults and keep moving the goalposts. No nation is perfect. But unlike the bureaucrats in Brussels or the Communist rulers in Beijing, Americans have always been free to criticize our own government. The trouble starts when that turns from criticism into contempt—when hating America becomes fashionable and profitable.
America’s strength is that we aren’t afraid of debate, disagreement, or tough questions. That’s what makes us exceptional—not globalist speeches or virtue-signaling on social media. But real progress never comes from gleeful self-destruction. The country needs people who love it enough to fix what’s broken, not liberals who spend every day begging for approval from people who’d rather see us fail. So here’s a question for the sneering America-haters: if this country’s so terrible, why do millions still fight to get in? Maybe it’s time to stop whining and start appreciating what makes America great.
