Hollywood just can’t help itself. Even when the studios hand a legendary director like Christopher Nolan the keys to one of human civilization’s greatest stories, they find a way to torpedo it with petty identity politics. Everyone expected Nolan’s big-budget “Odyssey” to be the blockbuster event of the summer. Now, it looks more like another lecture from the woke elite.
The casting drama started as soon as the film was announced. No Greek actors in a story rooted in ancient Greece? Apparently, authenticity is less important than ticking off diversity checkboxes. And then there’s the translation—Nolan decided to use a “modernized,” feminist-driven retake on Homer’s epic, designed by an academic obsessed with stripping away so-called “patriarchal” language. Translation: this is just another attempt to rewrite history to fit progressive fantasies.
But the real slap in the face? Casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, the very symbol of Greek beauty and femininity, then turning around and making the entire Odyssey about female empowerment. When pressed, Nyong’o made it crystal clear she wants Homer’s classic tale to focus more on women, as if a story about war, homecoming, and the struggles of men returning to their families wasn’t worthy on its own. Never mind that the poem is packed with vital female characters—these Hollywood types toss all that aside because it doesn’t fit their narrative.
Let’s not ignore the absurd irony. The same actress who rakes in millions from an industry obsessed with looks now complains about her character being famous for beauty. Only in the topsy-turvy world of left-wing Hollywood do stars bite the hand that feeds them—and expect applause for it!
The writing is on the wall. Even Nolan’s powerhouse reputation can’t save a movie that alienates its built-in audience before the curtain rises. People see right through these stunts—just look at the backlash pouring in online. Moviegoers are tired of being shamed and lectured. Maybe Hollywood should start listening to real Americans, instead of liberal academics and elite activists. Otherwise, how long until they finally lose every last seat at the box office?
