It must be nice to rule over New York City as a socialist bigwig. While crime explodes and the working class gets squeezed by sky-high prices, the elites in city government have just found a new way to pad their pockets — with your money. That’s right: New York’s council members, after choking landlords with endless regulations and demanding rent freezes, are now giving themselves fat paychecks. Eighteen percent bigger. Retroactive raises, back to January. And they’re locking in automatic pay bumps every year from now on, no messy public votes required.
Just look at what’s happened. City politicians like Council Member Nantasha Williams want to boost their own salary from nearly $150,000 to over $175,000. And that’s before tallying in new perks for the mayor, the council speaker, and every other “public servant” in the political club. This comes on the heels of a bloated, record-smashing budget that taxpayers are forced to pay for, whether their streets get cleaned or not. It’s shameless. While New Yorkers tighten their belts, their supposed leaders are sneaking through pay grabs at the stroke of a pen.
Some of these leftists are pretending they don’t want the extra cash. But everyone knows how this movie ends. Socialist politicians promise restraint, then line their own pockets while the middle class is left with crumbs. It’s the same story in every failed socialist experiment across the globe: the ruling elites get richer, the regular people lose everything. Landlords — mostly middle-class citizens, not billionaires — are being squeezed dry. Soon, when maintenance stops and buildings crumble, the city will swoop in and declare itself landlord. That’s not progress; that’s the first step down the road to government ownership of everything you thought you owned.
These are the consequences of letting radical Democrats and socialists like Zohran Mamdani set policy in America’s largest city. They say it’s all for the people. But the only ones getting richer are the politicians themselves. The rest of us will be lucky if our neighborhoods aren’t turned into slums while bureaucrats feast on six-figure salaries funded by the taxpayers.
This is what happens when liberal politicians think they’re above the rules. New Yorkers are forced to fund their own decline, while socialist elites laugh all the way to the bank. The question now is simple: how much longer will decent Americans put up with this scam?
