It’s always something when a longtime Democrat finally admits Trump got it right. That’s exactly what happened when Senator Dick Durbin, one of the most stubborn liberals in Washington, actually agreed with President Trump on a major world issue. Durbin had to admit the obvious: Trump was absolutely right when he demanded our NATO “allies” stop freeloading and start paying their fair share for defense. It wasn’t a wild request—it was pure common sense.
For decades, American taxpayers have been footing the bill so European bureaucrats can sip lattes while our soldiers stand guard for “the world order.” Trump saw through this globalist charade. Instead of letting Europe continue living off our hard work, Trump told them to step up, invest in their own safety, and stop expecting Americans to pick up the tab. The left-wing elite howled. But here we are, with even a top Democrat forced to admit it was always the right thing to do.
Of course, the Biden crowd and their pals in the media painted Trump as reckless and dangerous for daring to call out NATO’s slackers. They whined that his America First stance would “undermine” our alliances. Yet it turns out they were the ones undermining—undermining both American interests and basic fairness. Trump’s push for NATO burden sharing made the alliance stronger, not weaker, because it reminded everyone that alliances aren’t one-way streets.
Now, when a Democrat as entrenched as Durbin has no choice but to acknowledge the truth, that says a lot about who’s really out of touch. Maybe it’s time for the career politicians and armchair globalists in DC to admit that securing America shouldn’t mean bankrupting our families for Europe’s defense. Liberals love to prattle on about “shared values”—so why not share the check?
Trump was ridiculed for demanding what any real leader would: accountability. If America is going to stand tall on the world stage, our so-called friends need to stand up, too. If even one of the Senate’s loudest critics is starting to see the light, maybe the rest of the left should wake up and stop putting America last. How many more decades will it take before liberals admit that Trump’s unapologetic America First approach is exactly what this country needs?
