Shenna Bellows is at it again. Maine’s Secretary of State wants to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins—again—despite already getting trounced by Collins in 2014. That humiliating defeat wasn’t even close, and Bellows scored less than a third of the vote. In politics, there are comebacks and then there’s delusion. Bellows clearly can’t tell the difference.
It’s almost amusing watching Democrats recycle failed candidates. This time, Bellows is banking on the idea that her party is desperate enough to rally behind someone who already proved she can’t compete with Senator Collins. Not only did she lose the Senate race years ago, but she even managed to come in fourth place during her failed attempt at Maine’s governor race. Democrats love to talk about “fresh faces,” but all they seem to have are tired, beaten politicians clinging to any chance to stay relevant.
When the Democratic frontrunner, Graham Platner, dropped out, Bellows leaped at the chance to get back in the spotlight. But, let’s not forget—she had just gone out of her way to endorse Platner, calling him her close friend and ally. Now, with Platner out, suddenly Bellows wants everyone to forget her earlier loyalty and rally behind her instead. Nothing screams “political opportunism” louder than changing your tune after you see an opening.
Meanwhile, Bellows is promising more of the same tired left-wing talking points. She claims she’ll “unify Democrats” and “fight for working people,” even though her track record is proof that Mainers aren’t buying it. The real question: How will another out-of-touch Democrat, who’s already been rejected by voters, magically defeat an accomplished senator like Susan Collins? Are Maine Democrats so desperate they’ll run someone with a losing streak and pretend it’s a sign of strength?
Perhaps the only thing Bellows will unite is the opposition. If this is the best the Democrats can do—run serial losers and call it a “movement”—then it’s no wonder conservatives keep winning. Maine deserves better than recycled failures with empty promises. Maybe it’s time liberals learn what Mainers already know: you can’t fool the people with the same broken record.
