The world watched in awe on that cold November night in 1989. East Germans rushed through holes in the Berlin Wall, finally free after decades of communist oppression. People hugged, laughed, and celebrated like never before. That wall had divided families, dreams, and basic human rights for twenty-eight miserable years. But somehow, in today’s upside-down world, there’s a growing crowd in Germany who long for life behind the Iron Curtain. If that doesn’t expose the dangers of historical amnesia, what does?
Let’s call this what it is: dangerous nostalgia for a failed system. Some folks in the former East sigh about the loss of “security”—forgetting that so-called security always comes with shackles. Life under the GDR was bleak and lifeless. Streets and buildings looked like movie sets from a black-and-white dystopia. Want a new car? Good luck waiting decades for a smog-belching hunk of junk. Stores were barren, choice was a fantasy, and style didn’t exist. But that’s the socialist dream for you—everyone gets the same drab, empty-handed existence.
The liberal elites love to sell socialism as some kind of utopia, full of guaranteed jobs, “free” healthcare, and cozy neighborhood bonds. They parade the same tired promises in America today. But let’s not kid ourselves: back in East Germany, universal healthcare meant crowded clinics with outdated equipment. Yes, you could get a job—but only if you walked the party line. Try to speak your mind, read the wrong book, or cross the border? Expect a knock at the door from the secret police. The Stasi terrorized whole neighborhoods. People lived in fear that the neighbor, or even their own family, might betray them.
Most shocking of all is how selective these “nostalgic” memories are. They gloss over the prisoners, the tortured, the souls murdered for daring to be free. It’s easy for some to remember cheap beer and dance parties. But they ignore the gun towers, the surveillance, the walls that kept everyone inside like livestock. This isn’t some victimless longing for the “good old days.” It’s a slap in the face to the thousands who risked or lost everything trying to escape that left-wing hellscape.
When liberal politicians, globalist bureaucrats, or college radicals flirt with socialist schemes, pretending they’ll “fix” society, remember the GDR’s example. Freedom is messy, unequal, and sometimes loud. But only in a free society can you live, dissent, take risks, and shape your own destiny. Those nostalgic for a gray, government-planned world haven’t learned the lesson of the Wall: that comfort without liberty equals a life not worth living. The Wall fell for a reason. Let’s not let woke dreamers or bureaucratic tyrants build it back, brick by bureaucratic brick.
