Something is rotten in the Dairyland. Wisconsin claims to have some of the toughest open records laws in America—yet the people in charge act like they’ve never even heard of transparency. State and local government agencies are supposed to be open books. If you want to see how your tax money is spent or what your leaders are up to, you’re supposed to have that right. But when a watchdog group knocked on the door of Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction (DPI), what they found was a fortress with the doors slammed shut.
It started with a simple records request about a lavish education workshop. Instead of handing over the facts, DPI dragged their feet—forcing the public to wait months. Some requests took more than a year. Others came with a sky-high price tag. Want to know where those tax dollars went? You’d better be ready to go to court, because that’s apparently what it takes to get bureaucrats to do their jobs.
And let’s be clear here—this is not just a conservative complaint. No matter the issue, agency, or political leaning of the person who asked, the roadblocks stayed the same. Liberal, conservative, it didn’t matter. When it comes to hiding information, Wisconsin’s government plays favorites with itself. They waste taxpayer money, cook up secret deals, and then dare you to try and uncover what’s really going on. Some officials are even making people sign nondisclosure agreements about what happens at these taxpayer-funded events. What are they so scared you’ll find?
It’s no accident that Tony Evers and his administration are refusing to turn over critical voter data and benefits information to the Trump administration. Anyone who’s watched the chaos in California knows this playbook by heart: Tighten your grip. Shield your records. Hope the public gets tired and stops asking questions. This is the same crowd that talks nonstop about “democracy” and “accountability”—but runs for cover when the spotlight turns their way.
If these Democrats are as honest and transparent as they claim, why do they act like they have so much to hide? Sunlight is still the best disinfectant, and Wisconsin needs a good, hard dose right now. When politicians treat your hard-earned tax dollars like their private slush fund, Americans have every right to be angry. How long are citizens supposed to play by the rules when government isn’t even playing the same game?
