Kagan’s Shocking Tribute to Lindsey Graham Exposes How Conservatives Lost the Supreme Court Fight

When Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett showed up to Congress to talk dollars and security, something almost shocking happened. Instead of the same tired routine, Kagan paused to give her version of a salute to the recently deceased Sen. Lindsey Graham. Yes, the same Lindsey Graham many conservatives spent years shaking their heads at—especially for his baffling record of cozying up with the left when it counted most.

Let’s not rewrite history: Graham was one of the precious few Republicans who voted to confirm Kagan, a jurist whose liberal legal views have done real damage to America’s foundational values. Somehow, he believed if you just sit down for a chat and fire off a friendly question or two, you could put a radical on the Supreme Court and call it “bipartisan decency.” That’s the swamp logic that put a rubber stamp on Barack Obama’s agenda and gave progressives free rein at the highest court.

To hear Kagan fondly recall chatting about holiday traditions with Graham, laughing and trading clever remarks, you’d think it was an episode of a warm sitcom instead of a pivotal moment for the Constitution. Liberals love to praise this sort of backslapping as “class” and “civility.” But the American people deserve a lot more than dinner-party manners. They deserve leaders who fight for conservative principles, not politicians desperate for applause from D.C. insiders and the mainstream media.

The left is all too happy to remember these moments. They hold them up as proof conservatives should “give a fair shake” to their agenda—then turn right around and demonize a Republican nominee at the first opportunity. When a conservative is up for confirmation, suddenly “fairness” is out the window. Double standards like these are exactly why the American public is fed up with establishment politicians selling out the base for a pat on the back from their so-called “friends” across the aisle.

Graham’s final legacy? He might be remembered by liberals as a “respectful” voice, willing to cross the aisle for “unity.” But real Americans know where that kind of unity gets us: more progressive judges chipping away at our freedoms. Maybe it’s time our so-called Republican leaders stop worrying about being liked by the left—because if “class” means losing the country, count this writer out.
