The truth teachers unions are desperate to hide about parents taking control of schools

Public school bosses will say just about anything to distract from what they truly fear: parents taking charge. Take union leader Mike Mulgrew, for example. He’ll rant and rave about politicians, budgets, and tests—but there’s one thing he won’t talk about. What really keeps him up at night? It’s the idea that parents might actually have choices.

Let’s be honest: teachers unions like the one Mulgrew runs thrive when students are trapped. Their power depends on every kid being forced into government-run schools, no matter how lousy those schools are. When schools fail, do the unions admit their methods are broken? Of course not. Instead, they fight tooth and nail to make sure parents can’t look elsewhere. Why else do they hate charter schools, homeschooling, or any form of competition? Because if families had real options, parents would run for the exits—leaving union bosses with empty classrooms and empty pockets.

Liberal politicians are right there to help. They talk a big game about “equity” and “justice,” but their idea of fairness is making sure no parent can escape their failing system. Instead of empowering families, they hand more power to union officials who only care about their own jobs and pensions. Meanwhile, American kids sit in broken classrooms while bureaucrats collect raises. It’s the definition of hypocrisy.

Of course, these union bosses always frame their demands as if it’s all for the students. Don’t be fooled. Their real priority is job security and control. Whenever parents start to get wise, the unions panic. They’ll spend millions to crush any reforms or school choice laws. And who pays for that? Ordinary American families, who are desperate for better schools and a real shot for their children.

So next time Mulgrew or any union chief starts lecturing about “what’s best for the kids,” listen closely to what they’re not saying. The truth is simple: the union’s worst nightmare is a parent with options. Why are they so afraid of freedom?
