You won’t believe why Indonesia’s first president begged America for help with a gossip columnist

Most Americans today have probably never heard the name Sukarno. He was Indonesia’s first president, ruling a country that often dances on the edge of chaos. Yet, decades ago, this leader of the world’s largest Muslim nation was desperate for just a little bit of American stardust. Instead of big-time, hard-hitting diplomacy, guess what Sukarno begged from the U.S. government? He wanted help booking a gossip columnist. That’s right—the Indonesian leader called up our State Department because he wanted Cindy Adams, a reporter, to visit Indonesia. Call it diplomacy by tabloid.

This is the problem with so many so-called “leaders” of the world. When it comes to meaningful alliances or standing against Communist aggression, they shrink. But they roll out the red carpet for American pop culture. Meanwhile, liberal politicians back home trip over themselves apologizing for our influence. Where real leadership is needed, it’s always American flash they want—not American strength.

Indonesia, back then and now, has been what journalists like to call a “ticking time bomb.” Open your eyes and you see it: religious tensions, corruption, and a population ready to explode. Sukarno didn’t want to fix that. He wanted headlines and Hollywood glitz. Instead of battling extremism, he was working the phones for press coverage. It’s classic globalist thinking—look good, say the right words, get your photo taken, and let the real problems fester. It’s the same attitude you find in D.C. today.

While world leaders in unstable places play at public relations, what do the liberal elites in the U.S. do? They encourage the spread of Western culture but hold back American values. We get lectures about respecting foreign traditions, while our enemies drool over our celebrities and journalists. No one wins, least of all the American people. The globalists love these photo-ops because it’s easy, it’s cheap, and it covers up the rot inside.

So here’s the hard truth: America is better than this. We built freedom because we earned it—not because we sent a reporter to make some dictator look modern. When will our leaders wake up to the real dangers out there? Or do they still think the answer to global chaos is one more handshake and a photo on page six?
